No Internet On Planes

from the bye-bye-email-from-the-air dept

It was no surprise that American air carriers put internet from airplanes on the backburner a few weeks ago. Now, however, even Singapore Airlines, who had been testing an email-in-the-air solution says they're putting those plans on hold. They say it's due to the prevailing economic climate following September 11th. I would think that things like inflight internet would actually help to encourage people to start flying again, but I guess not.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    No Subject Given

I think the airlines would rather rent us those cheesy headphones so we can "enjoy" the in-flight entertainment.

True... Of course, at least United has given up on that plan and now gives headsets free to everyone. I actually think this makes me more likely to fly United than any other airline...

I've also heard that other airlines are ditching the fees... and on a recent flight on American, I think the flight attendant actually gave me too much money back as "change", so that I actually got paid to enjoy the in-flight entertainment.

You mean you don't take your own headphones with you? I always take headphones, two prong jack and a doubler so that two people can share. Not that there is ever anything worth listening to anyway.

        What about legroom?

Personally, I don't mind paying the $5 on American to watch the movie, if its a movie I want to see. I'll take their extended legroom in every seat over United any day.

Always bring your own headphones. Its just sounds better.
