Government As A Tech Consumer

An interesting look at how tech companies are salivating over the one customer they see who has all sorts of money to spend: the U.S. government. The government has been unsuccessfully pushing for "e-government" initiatives and other technology plans to streamline their notoriously bureaucratic systems for years. However, when the times were good tech companies didn't want to go through the hassle of dealing with government agencies and the government never saw the urgency. Now, tech companies realize the government may be one of the few customers out there who can pay cash, and the government has incentive to streamline their systems and make them safer following September 11. Of course, that doesn't mean they'll be any easier to deal with, and as we've pointed out in the past there are additional problems when you're dealing with the government as your one huge customer (especially if the government stops giving you business...).
