So Many VC Publications
from the publish-away dept
For an industry where not much is happening, there certainly are an awful lot of media companies focusing on it. Maybe that's because they're all just sitting on billions of dollars. Venture capitalists these days have a number of choices on where to go to read about what's happening in their industry. The "grandfather" of the online services is VentureWire which finally began charging late last year. They still charge less than many of the older offline venture capital focused publications like VentureOne. Then, of course, there's the former Silicon Alley Reporter - which has been repackaged as Venture Reporter. I received what I assume is a complementary copy in the mail the other day. They want to charge $17/issue of this slim magazine - which seems a bit excessive. Jason Calacanis who is not known for being modest or to ever shy away from a chance at hype has announced that he will "crush" VentureWire. Should be fun to watch. The one that seems to have the best info (by reputation - and it isn't mentioned in this article), though, is InsiderVC.com A few years back I ended up with the domain VCWhispers.com. Maybe I should fire it up and take on all these guys.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
