Is Qwest The Next Enron?

from the so-many-choices dept

Who's next up to bat? It seems that financial columnists are pushing each other over in search of the "next Enron". Red Herring jumps into the game suggesting that perhaps Qwest is the next Enron by going through a detailed look at how they accounted for the publishing of their phone directories. If you read the article you realize that, yes, Qwest did a few sketchy things to move some revenue around. However, it's nowhere near as insane as the moves that Enron was making to make their earnings numbers. I also find it amusing that the Herring article seems to make sure to point out over and over and over (and over) again that Qwest's auditors were (drum roll, please...) Arthur Andersen. That seems to be the strongest link they have to Enron. Yes, the moves are somewhat questionable, but they certainly don't appear to be Enron-scale trickery.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Hmmm...

Maybe that's why they call the thing Red Herring?
