Mail Order Your Own Silicon Valley Guy

from the oh-please-stop dept

Okay. As a single guy in Silicon Valley with plenty of single guy friends, it's fun (to a point) to complain and joke around about the lack of available women around here. But, something about people setting up sites for women to find eligible Silicon Valley male professionals is bothersome. Especially when they completely make up statistics - such as that the ratio of singles guys to women in the valley is 10 to 1 (I'd like to see where they got that stat from - most of the articles I've read on the topic place it at more like 1.2 to 1). My experience is that there actually are plenty of single women out there, and it's certainly possible to meet them - but finding interesting single women that you're interested in dating is the tricky part. That's true just about anywhere, though. Throwing yourself up on an online meat market isn't likely to change that.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. Is the opreative word "single"

if the male:female ratio in the valley is 1.2:1, then if ~80% of people are in some sort of heterosexual relationship, then you could have a 10:1 ratio of single men to single women.

So... is the 1.2:1 ratio the overall sex ratio in the valley, or the ratio of all single folks.?

    Re: Is the opreative word

As much as I like Techdirt, I have to disagree. The Bay Area is not like any other place for dating.... I meet far fewer single women here than elsewhere. I meet a TON of women, but they are all involved in long term and serious relationships already.

PS: But you are right, an online meat market isn't going to help, because you are still the same bunch of single guys battling over the same bunch of single women. But then again without internet personals, I would hardly date at all.

    moral imperative

Moral imperative is definitely the term I used when telling my folks not to buy a computer preloaded with Windows XP.

    Did they listen?

    No.

What happens in *real* 10/1 environments...

I spent a little time in an organization with a real 10/1 male/female ratio, the USMC. Now the weird thing is that they're aware of the social and psychological phenomena that occure in these environments (and I'm talking about on ships and overseas, where the highschool grads (who's only option was the USMC) don't speak enough of the local language to get laid).

In these envirobnment any of the following are common:

WMs (women marines) prostituting themselves, getting very rich in the process, but creating a readness problem due to VD.

Superiors picking and choosing abitious "favorites" who are ready and willing.

Adultry. This is rampant and I imagine that it is one of the strongest reasons behind much of the hate and discontent in the service.

pseudo-homosexual activity... usually happens in groups aboard ships (uh, like where do you think the term "circle jerk" came from?).

questionable group activity and superiors picking and choosing are usually over looked.

prostition and adultry are pursued by the NSI... how vigerously depends on who is screwing whom.

What I suspect should happen with SV is the legalization of prostition.

    online meat market no help?

From personal experience, I have to disagree. I always had problems meeting women that I could be interested in (and likewise who were interested in ME) in the offline world...I mean lets face it, bars and dance clubs are the REAL meat markets and superficiality is totally rampant...in those places its not who you are, its what you look and dress like that's important...finding someone attractive with common interests is a crap shoot.

At least on dating services (online/phone) you have a somewhat better advantage. On an online service, you can be yourself, you can outline CLEARLY what you want, what you can offer and someone who answers you has a clear idea and you also know what that person wants and can offer. You can make a more informed decision on whether to move forward with them...

I met my current gf on a dating line..going on 6 months and we're moving in together in a month. Its not the end all be all answer...but in my opinion its a truckload better than cruising a bar or any other public place.

    You got me...its Chris Knight...

I'm still having that dream where I'm sitting on top of a pyramid in a sun robe with thousands of women throwing little pickles at me.

And please, if every geek in silicon valley looked like me, Chris Knight (aka-Val Kilmer), then they'd all be getting laid. Man, I'm pretty...

you boneheads are forgettting the entire point of the internet. distributed user base! who said you could only date SV women? Chicks from Montana could be on the site, and be willing to move out there. any average joe in SV beats their redneck hilllbilly counterpart competition in those areas.

internet opens a whole new base of people you can reach, DUH !
