Checking Out Spam

from the the-old-standby dept

It seems that every few months a reporter with too much free time on their hands notices all that spam mail they've been receiving and wonders (as do we all) what sort of morons actually send that stuff out. It's not long before they have written an article about how they responded to various spammers. They all seem to say the same things. If they try to email back, the messages always bounce (well, duh). Instead, they have to call, and leave a message on a voice mail system for the person to call them back. Inevitably, when they are called back and told they are speaking to a reporter, they get agitated and hang up quickly. What would be a more interesting story is tracking down who the gullible folks are who actually respond to spam for real and give these jokers money.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Nothing like shinning sunshine

Nothing like shinning sunshine on a vampire to make them go away. This idea sounds like something for the muckraker Michael Moore. I loved it when Mr Moore got the home phone number of a telemarketer business owner and called him at meal times.
