W3C Backs Away From Patent Royalty Policy

There was quite an uproar last fall when the W3C suggested that they would let companies claim patent rights for technologies used in their standards. After some consideration it appears they've rethought that idea. They still haven't quite figured out how they're going to deal with standards that involve a patented technology that they can't figure out a way around - which is an issue with a few of the standards they're working on. Hopefully, they'll join up with folks who are pushing hard to reform patent law.
