Do We Need A 3D Web?

from the not-convinced dept

Last fall I mentioned that I have a book from '96 or '97 about VRML, the 3D modeling language that never went anywhere. It was somewhat cool at the time, but not too many people wanted to browse the internet in 3D. Has anything changed since then? Well, there's a bit more bandwidth going around (for some people, at least), which could have an impact, but I'm still not convinced that people really care to browse into the third dimension. That, of course, is no reason for people to stop trying. A working draft of a new 3D modeling language has been released and the true believers are back. I'm interested to see what people do with it, but I'll withhold judgment until I see if anyone actually find it useful.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    VRML is the new .NET!
Seriously, it's got more potential than push and WAP combined!
