3G Expectations Reset
from the well,-it's-about-time dept
A short roundup of this year's CTIA conference pointing out that all the wireless carriers have finally realized what everybody else knew all along: they had been vastly overhyping 3G wireless technology. It's still a very expensive proposition to create real 3G networks, and it's unclear if the carriers can get back the revenue to make it worthwhile. Especially in the US, there hasn't been very much demand for the services. The problem is that for years the carriers have been making it sound as if we're all going to have lightening fast internet access from anywhere on any devices. They're not in a position to deliver that, and everything else they deliver doesn't live up to that hype. Overpromising and underdelivering doesn't make for a very happy market.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Back in the UK!
I agree three G is way over hyped however, where 3G may fail (due to price issues), 2.5G may be just the answer. Here in the UK it may soon look promising.
