Microsoft Working On Image Passwords
from the how-good-is-your-memory? dept
Here's an article about how folks at Microsoft Research are working on password systems that use images instead of text. This isn't all that new, but it's the first time I've heard of Microsoft playing around with the technology. Of course, I'm really not sure how much more useful such a system is. I realize that it's probably more secure, and much tougher to crack. However, it also sounds like it would be more difficult to remember. People who like these image password systems say that images are easier to remember. That may be true, but having to remember a set of images, where to click within each image, and in which order to click sounds a lot more complex than remembering a password... I would think such a system would cause a lot more lost or forgotten paswords to occur - which can be costly.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Pitchers v. Text
No doubt the same people who think that pointing at and clicking on icons is easier than remembering a few commands and typing them at the command prompt. Ugh. I'm still not used to the GUI OS, now this....
