Always On Broadband More Important Than Speed
from the makes-sense dept
While I know plenty of people who would definitely agree with this statement, it's the first time I've seen it mentioned as a major reason why people sign up for broadband. They're sick and tired of having to log in and dialup every time they want to use the internet. The always-on nature of a broadband connection is more important to many people than the higher speeds. The higher speeds, of course, are very nice and people would miss them should they go away. However, I think most internet providers don't realize how much people value an always-on connection.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Amen!
And, more importantly, I think a LOT of other people would, too.

I think we need a killer app
Maybe grid computing will help and we'll be able to rent our "off" times and use the computing power of others when we're "on."
The main problem with broadband is that it's too damned slow. Give me grid computing applications and 128 MegaBYTES a second and then we'll have something useful!

Speed

Re: Speed
Here in the UK the cable companies have started selling 128k broadband at just slightly higher than dial up prices. I have the feeling it's selling well! Always on is the killer feature, no doubt.

Re: Speed
My point though was that always on was probably least important to a gamer.
