Wearable Electronics

from the sew-that-right-here dept

Infineon, who makes DRAM chips, has put together some prototypes of chips and systems that can be sewn directly into clothing. Thus, it will be possible to have an MP3-playing shirt or jacket. They also say similar technology could eventually be useful for folding screens and other technologies that would certainly be fun to have around or even (probably a better use) for medical monitoring. Obviously, these are a bit early on, so I wouldn't be looking for this stuff to show up in stores any time soon. I also wonder how well these wearable chips handle the washing machine - or, just everyday wear and tear. It sounds like it would be cool... but I would imagine it will take a few generations before they work out a lot of the bugs.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Mike ... do we really want these chips in our clothes? How is this going to be more benifical than having portable objects?

If one was to relate to technological advancement in the vein to which wewie does the benefits of the like of walking on the moon would be a mute and uneventful happening. It is not about the benefits but the possibilities and the endless supply of ingenius probabilities.
