Buy And Hold Outdated?
from the the-new-new-economy dept
In the past few decades lots of people talked about the "buy and hold" strategy of long term investing. It worked when everything is going up. It doesn't work so well in markets like the current ones - so suddenly some analysts are saying that buy and hold is for suckers. Their arguments seem to miss the point of long term investing. The fact is that it is very very difficult to outguess the market consistently. People who are constantly trading are putting themselves at greater risk in trying to do exactly that. While some regular trading makes sense, so does some "buy and hold". Like any investment decision, it depends on the person and what they're trying to do with their money. I think anyone who claims that buy and hold is the only way or the complete wrong way is doing a disservice to anyone who listens to them.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
