E*Trade CEO Gives Back Some Money

from the here,-take-what-you-want dept

After the amazing uproar concerning the news that E*Trade's CEO got about $80 million in compensation last year while his company tanked, Christos Cotsakos has now said that he's going to give back $21 million to show his commitment to the company (NY Times, registration required, etc). He also said he'll accept no base salary for the next two years. Of course, when all the various compensation you get outside of base salary adds up to 99% of your compensation, this doesn't seem like such a big deal. I also don't think that returning $21 out of $80 million is such a wonderful gesture either. The company is falling apart and he still took home approximately $59 million. Not bad work, if you can get it.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Falling apart ? Please. E-trade is actually doing fairly well ... relative to anyone else in the same business. Doesn't forgive the salary but still, choose your words with more thought.

Mike, could you possibly be more of a DWEEB? Your commentary on the news is comically shortsighted. Because, who really gives a rat's hoo-hoo what you think?

      Re: No Subject Given

Yet more constructive criticism from the anonymous crowd. It amazes me that the criticism I've been getting lately has been along the lines of how I'm lame or a dweeb. I really don't think the issue of whether I'm lame or a dweeb has anything to do with this site. For all you know (and you have no reason to know either way) I could be both of those things. But that has nothing to do with this site.

As for being comically shortsighted, I'm willing to discuss that if you just explained what you meant. I stand up and will argue for what I believe. You seem to hide behind anonymity and call names.

And, as for the final point, it appears that the thousands of people who visit this site every day seem to at least give some rat's hoo-hoo about what I think. If you don't like what I have to say then go the fuck away. I really don't understand why you feel the need to make these stupid posts.
