Are PVRs Doomed To Fail?
from the well,-no dept
Here's an odd opinion piece. It's talking about how personal video recorders like the TiVo or ReplayTV are doomed to fail because people don't want another box on top of their TVs. I'm not completely sure people really care that much about the number of boxes on their TV, but more to the point, I don't think such news comes as a surprise to the PVR companies. Both TiVo and UltimateTV (while it was around) partnered with the satellite providers to put their functionality into the satellite receivers. They know that's the direction things are going in, and it's likely they'll keep partnering to license their technology. Also, this article is the first I've seen that ever distinguishes the differences between a DVR and a PVR. I had always assumed the two were completely interchangeable, but this article says that a PVR is any DVR that includes some sort of tv-guide like service as well.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

This guy is crazy!
I have the Hughes 35 hour DirectTivo combo unit. That box actually eliminated my old satellite receiver and my VCR is also collecting dust in a closet. As a result, I have fewer boxes associated with TV viewing.

Cold dead fingers.
My VCR use is now exclusively for copying off things to keep; e.g., things we don't have time to watch this month, as we only have 28 hrs of recording space on the 40GB HD I upgraded it with, or the Max Headroom reruns on TechTV.
