In Search Of The Elusive Broadband Customer
from the how-to-trap-them? dept
It seems that no one agrees why people aren't switching to broadband from dialup. Some people say it's the lack of compelling content. Some people say it's because it costs too much. Some people say it's a combination of both. I'd agree that it's probably a combination of both, combined with the fact that the companies that provide broadband have done a terrible job explaining the benefits to people. I get the feeling that broadband to the home will continue to grow at a reasonable pace, as people get more and more used to having high speed internet access. The fact is, it's a luxury for most people right now, and not a necessity. Update: Of course, another reason for slow adoption could be the incredible number of stories of frustrated broadband users.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Or you can't GET broadband.
The encumbant telco WOULD allow me to buy broadband DSL. But I'm a McLeod customer and therefore can not get DSL from the encumbant.
Love to switch. Can't.
