Hotels Upgrading Internet Access
from the sounds-great dept
The last few trips I've had to take have been annoying for the difficulty I've had in finding readily available broadband (preferably wireless) access at hotels. Back in March I spent an entire morning calling many hotels in the Washington DC area with no luck. It seems that (finally!) hotels are beginning to realize that they need to offer such features if they want to attract business travelers. The NY Times (registration, blah blah) has an article about what some hotels are doing. There are some that are even installing computers in every room. However, the most impressive (and which the article focuses on) are some hotels in London that are installing a complete system that includes a plasma flat panel display that acts as both a TV and a monitor. It comes with broadband access and a wireless keyboard (perfect for surfing from bed). The systems include some basic applications like Microsoft Office. And, of course, they tie into a video-on-demand system so people can order up whatever movie they'd like. Sounds fairly impressive. Of course, I'd just settle for decent WiFi access in hotels before I start hunting down those with such a fancy setup.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
