Employees Don't Feel Guilty About Surfing At Work

from the nor-should-they- dept

According to an online survey (and we all know how accurate that sort of data is likely to be) most folks don't feel the slightest bit guilty about surfing the internet for personal reasons while at work. In fact, many consider high speed internet access at work a "perk" of the job. Of course, this doesn't mean most companies are going to be any happier about their workers surfing on company time. It still surprises me how strict some companies feel they need to be with employees. While it's obviously a problem if people aren't getting their work done, employees who spend a small amount of time doing some personal surfing aren't doing any harm, and are probably just as productive as those who are only focused on work all day.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    surfing

I don't take fifteen smoke breaks at work every day or take a two-hour lunch, so why should I feel guilty about spending my break time surfing the internet? The only reason they won't ban it (though it is monitored) is because management is just as bad about doing it.

    yup

I have to be here 10 to 12 hours a day, 6 to 7 days a week. I have to be here wether I have actual work to do or not. Therefore, I surf.
