Earthlink Wins $24 Million From Spammer

from the whoo-hoo dept

So, while an ISP in Amsterdam couldn't get any money from a spammer, Earthlink has been awarded $24 million from a spammer. They don't actually expect to collect much money from the guy (who never even showed up in court), but are happy on the principle of the idea that they beat a spammer in court.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Am I alone?

Am I alone in thinking that this isn't as much of a victory as Earthlink says it is? I could be wrong (hey, it's 6:30am here!) but as far as I can tell from the short article, they won because the guy failed to show up in court or contest the claim.. They didn't win on the merits of the case.

If I'm correct, then the "win" doesn't fill me with much confidence that it'll bring more spammers to court.. As much as I hate to think that.

P.S. This is a great site, Mike! Keep up the good work!
