Vmyths Threatened By Angry Security Firm
from the go-away-or-I-shall-taunt-you-again dept
Long time Techdirt readers may have noticed that I almost never post anything having to do with virus warnings. I tend to think that most of them are incredibly overhyped by anti-virus software firms, and all this "crying wolf" isn't helping real security issues. I've always been a big fan of Rob Rosenberger and his Vmyths website for cutting through all the virus overhype. Not surprisingly, though, many of the anti-virus firms aren't thrilled with him. One, in particular, a company called mi2g, seems to have lost it when it comes to Rosenberger and is now threatening him with all sorts of lawsuits. The reasoning is a bit odd. Two of their complaints are that (1) search engines are often pointing to vmyths ahead of their own site and (2) that Rosenberger violated mi2g's founder's privacy by posting a photograph of its founder - which was from mi2g's own press kit which they had sent him. I'd love to see the legal reasoning for charging that because Google returns one page over another that something illegal has been done.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
