Athens, Georgia Launches Free WiFi Access

It seems more and more local governments are seeing the benefits of offering free (or, in some cases, cheap) WiFi of their downtown areas. Palo Alto, California, has been experimenting with such a system, and now Athens, Georgia is opening up 24 blocks of free WiFi access points. Of course, it will be interesting to see how they get the news out, and how people use these open networks. There is, of course, always the fear that the people who run these systems will freak out the first time someone launches a hacking attack from one of these networks. Hopefully, instead, most people will see the benefits of providing open WiFi for everyone and more municipalities will jump on the bandwagon.
