Resisting The Urge For Questionable Business Practices
from the not-so-easy dept
A few years ago I was working with a tech company where the senior execs clearly stated that the company should do anything it could to increase it's top line revenue. They absolutely did not care about its effect on profit. It was this sort of thinking that had companies giving away dollar bills for $0.95. But, the problem was that everyone else was doing it, and how do you compete in that sort of world? The San Jose Mercury News has an article about one exec at a tech company who tried very hard to avoid the temptation to do questionably ethical moves in pumping up revenue numbers. Of course, some even question that exec's moves as well. The only good thing I can see coming out of this is that finally it seems that some execs may be recognized for good ethical behavior - which should provide some (if not much) incentive for others to follow their example.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
