Happiest Victim Of Theft... Ever

from the and-the-stupidest-criminal dept

A woman in the UK has been dubbed the "happiest victim of theft ever" after the (apparently not very bright) thief who stole her debit card used it to bet on some horses. The way the betting system worked, when he won, all the winnings were deposited directly into her bank account. The thief, on the other hand, has pleaded guilty to stealing the card and is now on probation. It's not often you have your debit card stolen and then find out that it made you a lot more money. The betting place said that if the thief had lost money, they would have voided the transaction once they found out it was a fraudulent bet. However, under the circumstances, they decided to let her keep the winnings.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Betting on Debit Cards?

It's interesting that they let people place bets with debit cards. Here in Florida, no purchase that includes a lottery ticket can be purchased via debit or credit cards.
