Real Networks Might Go Porn

from the it's-a-business-model dept

A few years back Yahoo got into all sorts of PR trouble because some of the sellers on Yahoo Stores were selling porn DVDs. They'd been doing so for years, but some reporter picked up on the story, made it a big deal as if Yahoo! itself were in the porn business and Yahoo! ended up closing down those stores out of fear of a backlash. Apparently, the days of worrying about what the public thinks of porn are over, as Real Networks is thinking about adding an "adult" tier to their streaming video programs. It seems they've realized that this might be helpful in keeping them in business. They compare it to cable companies that offer porn pay-per-view channels.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

This would have been my subject if I had one.

And here all along I thought you stayed in business by offering a good product/service.

Real needs to seriously change a lot of how their players work if they want people to use them again. It's not even a media player anymore, it's an ad bonanza !
