How The Indian Tech Industry Pushed Back Against Nuclear War

from the interesting dept

The latest Thomas L. Friedman column, republished at the Mercury News, looks at how the real reason the nuclear threat between India and Pakistan has calmed down a bit recently is that technology firms in India freaked out over what would happen to their business. He details how many major world conglomerates base a large part of their operations in India, and all got very worried over the past few months, and have threatened to pull out of the country altogether. The local companies made sure that politicians knew just how much damage this was doing to their business, and forced the politicians to calm down a bit. I'm sure not everyone thinks this was the defining factor, but it's still very interesting.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    McDonalds

Until the Balkan conflicts of the early 1990s, the funny rule of thumb was that any two countries with McDonald's franchises had ever gone to war against each other.

Maybe that'll be the Microsoft Mantra of the New Millenium.
