eCommerce Comes To Ethiopia With A Sheep Giving Site
from the whatever-works dept
While internet and credit card penetration in Ethiopia are still very low, one entrepreneur has apparently built an e-commerce site that fills a need there. It seems that it's traditional in Ethiopia to give someone a sheep as a gift, and Ethiopians abroad (who do have internet access, and do have credit cards) were having trouble buying sheep remotely. Problem solved. An e-commerce site for Ethiopian ex-pats to buy and deliver sheep (and plenty of other gifts) online. The guy who created it even has taken a bit of Starbucks-style-marketing. Instead of offering small, medium, and large sheep, your choices are limited to medium, big, and "very big". I actually think this is a great example of what e-commerce should be about: filling a need that people have. Too many e-commerce sites weren't filling a need, they were filling a desire by the founder to get rich.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

I can just picture the poor person who actually wants a small sheep lamenting that he can't buy one!
