Spy On Your Kids

from the building-trust dept

Since there are already all sorts of monitoring programs to let you spy on which websites your kids are surfing on, why not get one that tells you who they're emailing as well. However, as the Register points out, the technology probably doesn't work all that well. It's also not particularly subtle, since it embeds a small logo in every email - so that your kids (and anyone who they email) know that their parents are not-very-effectively spying on them. Whatever happened to teaching kids right from wrong and trusting them to do the right thing?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

As a parent I could see a reason to do it if you had reason to believe your kid was involved in something potentially dangerous, and he or she had already passed on the chance to be honest.

Of course, you don't need any special software to track outgoing emails. I can think of a couple of ways to do it...
