DataPlay On Pause

from the going-nowhere-fast dept

A few weeks ago we had a story about the problems at DataPlay. The company had invented a new recordable disc format, about the size of a quarter that could hold 11 hours of music and plenty of other digital goodies. However, despite being widely overhyped by the entertainment industry, the company is "on hold" while they desparately search for new money that doesn't seem to be showing up. Many of their early supporters have bailed out. Apparently, the missed a lot of promises both on when the product would be ready and how much it would cost. They also point out that the music that has been released on the format is not the right type of music. The players cost $350 and would seem to be the type of thing that early adopters and music afficianados would pick up. Yet, the first pre-recorded releases on DataPlay were all teeny-bopper pop acts. Not quite sure what the record label was thinking on that one.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Painfully obvious...

"Yet, the first pre-recorded releases on DataPlay were all teeny-bopper pop acts. Not quite sure what the record label was thinking on that one..."

The same ol, pre-fab, pap they seem to only know how to push, and sadly, gets gobbled up...

11 hour discs, though, shout "compilation". Imagine taking established bands, packing up everything into a "fix", and marketing it to nostaglic middle agers who actually have money to spend...
