Will Digital Radio Kill Satellite Radio?
from the battle-for-the-airwaves dept
I've never been a huge fan of the idea of satellite radio. I know some readers here have disagreed with me about this in the past, but I couldn't see why there would ever be enough people willing to sign up for satellite radio to make it profitable. I know that it's good for some people, but on the whole, I didn't think there could be enough of those people out there. Now, with the FCC approving digital radio, some are wondering if that will kill off satellite radio before it ever really got big. Digital radio takes away one of the advantages that satellite radio claimed: clear, digital sound. However, my guess is that most people signing up for digital radio didn't sign up for the clearer sound, but the additional programming choices - which digital radio isn't going to offer. So, I don't see digital radio as a huge threat to satellite radio, but I'm still not sure where satellite radio is going to find enough customers to survive.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
