Still Waiting For Mobile Phones To Work With 911
from the long-wait dept
Nothing all that new in this Associated Press article, but it discusses the various problems that have occurred in getting the E-911 system setup. The FCC had set a timetable for having mobile phone carriers make it easier for police to locate 911 callers, but for a variety of reasons, the carriers have been slow to meet the scheduled times. The article does carry one interesting stat, which is that approximatley 50% of 911 calls are now from mobile phones, and that number is (not surprisingly) expected to rise. Now, I wonder what they'll do about actually having people answer those calls. The two times I've had to call 911 in the past few years from my mobile phone (both after witnessing traffic accidents), I could not get through, as all operaters were "currently busy".Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
