The Downturn That Won't Go Away

from the not-looking-good dept

When the economic downturn first started, a few people predicted things wouldn't get better until a large segment of the population gave up all hope of it getting better. It seems that things certainly are pretty terrible in Silicon Valley - as the two major newspapers in the area both have depressing stories of the downturn. The San Jose Mercury News calls it the the downturn that won't go away, and says that its having a huge psychological impact on many people in the Valley who used to think the future was always bright here. Over at the San Francisco Chronicle they have the story of a couple who are almost homeless after having difficulty finding work and getting kicked out of their apartment. They now live in an old RV that they bought for less than $5,000. I'm sure there are plenty of similar stories out there as well.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

uh, what is it with people...

    It's called a bubble...

things will *never* be like they were and we still haven't gotten any where close to "normal" yet.

I mean, just take a look at the Tulip market today!

No one is saying they want it to be like it was... They're just wondering when the economy will start to improve.

As for the comparison with the tulip market, that's not quite valid. The Tulip craze was about flowers. At least with the technology craze some new, useful, and innovative products were created.
