How The Cable Industry Will Kill The Internet
from the consequences dept
A very interesting discussion that ties together a number of the issues that regularly crop up here at Techdirt, talking about how new plans to have cable internet providers limit bandwidth to users will effectively kill the internet as we know it. In an attempt to make more money, these companies have convinced people that "bandwidth hogs" are a problem - though, there seems to be plenty of bandwidth to go around (and the cable companies themselves have admitted that the systems are built so they won't run out). The throughput limitations could also help make Hollywood happy by making it nearly impossible for anyone to download or stream content - since it would eat up their allocation. Normally, I would say that this would be an opportunity for a new business to come along and specifically offer access without limits, but as this article suggests, current FCC policy may make that nearly impossible, since the broadband providers don't have to open up their networks. In other words, they're getting a monopoly, and they're now using various "tiered" pricing schemes to squeeze extra monopoly profits out of it.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
