China Blocks CNN And BBC TV

from the websites-not-enough dept

Does China really think that because they don't show information, people will actually think it doesn't exist? Going beyond their usual blockage of websites they don't like China also blocked satellite TV broadcasts of CNN and the BBC after they mentioned Falun Gong. Doesn't this seem like a colossal waste of time and money?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

don't we do the same thing?

So they blacked out news during their equivalent of election day. The media here, too, has a virtual black-out of non-election news during that time.

Re: don't we do the same thing?

Huh? The government forces independent news organizations to go off the air for periods of time when they discuss groups that oppose the government? That happens during election time in the US? Have I missed something?

They wouldn't bother if it wasn't working. Sure some will get the information but the vast majority won't.

Not if you're trying to run a Communist nation and maintain total control.
