Profile Of A Spammer

from the sometimes-you-want-to-shake-people-who-just-don't-get-it dept

Yet another profile of a spammer. It seems that all of these spammer profiles have a few things in common. It's always a single person working out of their home who is vaguely antagonistic towards those who don't like their spam. They always say something along the lines of "I'm just trying to make a living, what's wrong with that?". They also always seem to insist that they folow all laws and don't send to people who haven't opted in. It's scary just how much these people don't understand what they're doing and how much of a nuisance they've become. The thing that still surprises me the most, though, is that anyone actually responds to spam - allowing these people to make money. Clearly, it's not too many people, but a few of them still do - and that's what keeps the spam coming.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    responding to spam...

Spammers probably classify "responding" and "opting in" as the hit they get from a web bug when your emailer opens/previews the spam itself.

    sigh.
