Yahoo Launches Web Hosting For Small Businesses

from the why? dept

Over the past few years plenty of companies have suddenly decided that they, too, want to be in the web hosting business. Most of those companies quickly realized it's very difficult to make money doing so, and bailed out. There are some companies that are doing okay in that world by focusing exclusively on offering top notch service to their hosting clients - but every company that sees it as an "add-on" to their business seems to struggle with it. That's why it's a bit surprising to hear that Yahoo is now thinking they can do it as well. I guess it's sort of the stage in between their Geocities personal sites and their Yahoo Stores e-commerce sites. I can see some small businesses using it, but it seems like a highly competitive business with very little that will let Yahoo distinguish itself from the competition.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

I thought they had this before

It may be a relaunch, or maybe this is a new version for small businesses, or may no longer be a rebranded service.

I see that servers.yahoo.com is still there, though, which has to be one of the weirdest services they offer.
