Blaming Internet Cafes For Violence
from the let's-see,-who-can-we-blame? dept
I doubt many people are surprised by this, but a Los Angelese city councilman is calling for an investigation into internet gaming cafes due to the violence that has been reported near some of them. This appears to be a typical "blame the venue" action that probably is worth a few votes with "concerned parents" who don't actually understand the issue. Clearly, these are gang related issues. The internet cafes are just a place. However, instead of actually doing something about youth gang violence, LA will now probably move to shut down internet cafes. All this means is that the violence will occur elsewhere, and kids who were actually using the cafes to play games or surf the web will end up on the streets as well.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

investigation into internet gaming cafes
Good luck solving that one.
The other co-owner here and I see it this way: We'd rather have them playing video games than doing somthing illegal.
And no, we don't have grand theft auto vice city here. :)
