Official Wi-Flying

from the find-those-hotspots dept

There have been a few examples of people "WiFlying" or "war flying" before. This is when people go up in an airplane with a WiFi enabled notebook computer and map all the open access points. However, historically, this is done by hobbyists. It's therefore, a bit surprising to find out that Utah's Chief Information Officer is making a practice of WiFlying. He took a couple different trips (so that all his kids could fly with him) and mapped out a bunch of open networks. He admits that he probably missed some by flying too fast, and wishes he could do it again with a helicopter. In the meantime, though, he's buildinga Pringles-can antenna to link up with his neighbor. These, of course, are standard techie practices, but surprising (in a good way) from Utah's CIO.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

This guy also has installed Userland Radio on a bunch of PC's and is encouraging behind the firewall blogging as low cost knowledgement management experiment. Pretty cutting edge guy - not what you expect as CIO the most conservative state in the Union!
