People Hate Pop Ups
from the gee,-what-a-shock dept
In case you hadn't noticed, most people can't stand pop up ads. A new study confirms the obvious, telling us that 78.3% of people find them "very annoying". I'm surprised, actually, at how low this number is. The study also found that people didn't mind interstitial ads so much, but I'm guessing this is just because they're not nearly as popular among advertisers these days. If every website you go to requires you to click through an interstitial, I'm sure people would find them alomst as annoying as pop ups. Either way, this is some evidence going against idiot marketers, like the guy at Orbitz, who claims that people like pop ups.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Easy to deal with
The only reason that pop-ups work at all is because 95% of all Web surfers are now using MSIE.
