Easynet Denies Child Porn Allegations

from the craziness dept

Easynet, which apparently has nothing to do with EasyGroup or the EasyInternetCafes from the story beneath this one, has responded to claims that they're peddling child pornography. In an article this weekend, investigative reporters who clearly had (1) too much time on their hands and (2) no idea how the internet works, accused the company of "peddling" child pornography, because people using their service could, possibly, access usenet groups that serve up child porn. Once again, as a public service, we'd like to remind people that ISPs and the like simply provide access. Again, if you took what the reporters said seriously, the entire internet would be "peddling child porn". There is a huge difference between those who provide the access, and those who provide the content. I'm not sure why it's so difficult to get so many heads around this concept.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Sigh

A common complaint: Why is it that when a telephone is used to help plan or commit a crime, that no one blames phone companies... but it is okay to blame ISPs when the internet is used that way? Yes, filtering is technically easier on an ISP than a telephone... but the can-of-worms over what should be filtered is intractable.
