Adware/Spyware Getting More Aggressive
from the installs-itself,-doesn't-uninstall-ever dept
The makers of adware and spyware products are getting ever more creative and aggressive in taking over computers. Wired News has an article about some adware called Xupiter that many people are struggling with these days. They say that it installs itself without asking for permission, takes over your browser, changes your homepage, takes over your searches, and will even add random words to things you type. All that, and it's incredibly difficult to uninstall. The makers of the program say that it only installs after permission has been granted and they offer an uninstaller. However, people have said both things are not true. I'm guessing that most of the people who discovered it was installed without their permission got it by downloading some sort of file sharing application that had it bundled in.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

BTW, Zone Alarm caught it when it tried to phone home. Even though I have a hardware firewall protecting my network, I have the free version of Zone Alarm on every PC just to catch any unauthorized outgoing traffic.
