Wireless Firms Jumping The Gun On New Spec?

A few weeks back we had an article explaining why people shouldn't be rushing out to buy 802.11g equipment just yet. Companies that make equipment are pushing out (and hyping up) 802.11g products, but since the standard isn't even set yet, some of the products are having compatibility issues. Of course, I still think that the companies selling 11g products are being a little sneaky in their marketing. They talk up the higher speeds of 11g without explaining to people that they're still limited by the bandwidth they have from their service provider. So, that means most people buying the early 11g equipment are discovering that (1) it might not be compatible with other 11g systems right now or down the road and (2) it's useless except when transferring data on an internal network.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
