Bands That Embrace File Sharing
from the just-a-few,-but-growing... dept
With all the stories pointing out where the music industry is screwing up, we might as well post a story or two that show where things are being done right. Slowly, but surely, more and more bands are realizing that they should embrace the idea of file sharing - especially when it comes to giving out live recordings of their concerts. What they've realized is that their music is a promotional item for the band and (even better!) it's a free promotional item that comes complete with a free distribution system. So far, it's mostly being embraced by artists who are big on live performances and touring. Of course, this sort of shift is a big problem for the labels who get most of their money from CD sales, and not touring. However, the actual musicians often make more money from touring than from CD sales... so it wouldn't be a surprise to see more bands start pushing for this sort of file sharing.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
