Ericsson to Test Interoperable IM

Since reporters love to compare technologies so much and ask "who will win?", I imagine that they'll eventually have a field day wondering if Ericsson's new phone-based instant messaging system will compete with standard SMS messaging, though they are somewhat different. The instant messaging offering lets people communicate beyond just another phone, and adds in the "presence" option showing if the person is available or not. There are plenty of possibilities for such things - such as setting phone calls to go directly to voicemail if the person is not "available". Interestingly, Ericsson plans to offer the service regardless of which carrier you use. As carriers want increasing control over the user experience, they may not appreciate such moves. Update: Not to be left behind Nokia announced plans to license technology from OZ Communications for their own presence solution.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

IM is not a threat to SMS

IM and SMS can work together. SMS maybe used as the transport for IM messages. So even though Ericsson is offering this service directly to users, it could generate extra SMS traffic for carriers. This is how AOL IM works on T-Mobile and other carriers.
