Online Filters Ditched In Australia Since They Don't Work
from the well,-of-course... dept
The debate in the US over forcing libraries and schools to install content filters has died down for the time being, but here's some more evidence why filters are a waste of time and money. They simply don't work. Australia, which is fairly gung ho about restricting access to certain sites, has discovered that the filters they recommend often don't work very well. The two products mentioned in the story show ridiculous failure rates. The first, Net Nanny, failed 38% of the time, while Cyber Sentinel failed more than half the time (53%). Of course, they don't say what type of failure we're talking about (Type I, Type II?), so it's unclear if, by "failure", they mean that the software is blocking a site it shouldn't, or not blocking a site it should.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
