P2P Betting Is The Next Big Thing?
from the not-quite-what-it-wounds-like dept
While my first thought was that this article was going to be about a Napster-style system for betting, it turns out that it has nothing to do with that kind of P2P. Instead, it's talking about how online betting shops are focusing now on setting up bets between people, rather than just letting them bet against the house. The system sounds fairly complicated, but it's basically an open market type of system, that once you read through the details isn't that hard to understand. The bigger question, though, is whether or not such gambling is legal in the US - and here no one agrees. The companies that take those bets from US bettors say (of course) it's perfectly legal - and point to how eBay is just providing a service connecting two buyers, but takes no responsibility for the transaction. It's a valid point. Of course, the question then remains whether the government could go after the individuals using the site for betting with each other.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
