Google As A Knowledge Operating System

from the different-perspective dept

The folks at Microdoc news find more to write about concerning Google than you could possibly imagine. What's even more surprising is that it's consistently interesting. Their latest piece suggests that Google is really much more than a search engine. It's becoming a knowledge operating system, handling all sorts of knowledge storage and retrieval tasks on the internet. Thinking about Google this way certainly opens up some of the possibilities for Google, both from an end-user perspective as well as for folks internal to Google. So, of course, the next question is how long until Microsoft views Google as a threat and tries to do something about it?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Google

Google is probably the most powerful information manipulation system in public operation, yet it posses a greater threat to Oracle. The beauty behind Google is that it rapidly retrieves and allows the user to manipulate data extremely efficiently: therefore Google could be the end of Oracle.

      Re: Google

Nonsense. What google does and what oracle (and all the other DB vendors of course) are not even similar. Google is great for finding single pieces of information from a huge amount of dissimilar information. Oracle etc. are great for dealing with enormous quantities of similar information.

    Google vs. Microsoft

Access to Google is far more important than access to any OS or application/tool.

Microsoft makes (mediocre) hammers. Google helps design buildings.

    groan

Google is a search engine, why the need to dream up new, inacurate terminology? It's like saying my cat is a Flea Transporter Unit (TM). True, but so what?

Knowledge is managed in a variety of ways. That weblog takes a long time to say absolutely nothing.
