Google Filter Blocks Innocuous Sites

from the oops dept

Ben Edelman may not be allowed to reverse engineer N2H2's internet filters, but that hasn't stopped him from checking out other filters. His latest report says that Google's "SafeSearch" feature (does anyone actually use this?) blocks a ton of innocuous sites, including corporate sites from Apple and IBM, a bunch of government sites (including some at the White House), an SAT prep site and the Washington Post. These results aren't the result of a human being too prudish (or too quick to judge) - as is the case at other filtering companies, but because it's all based on Google algorithms, so there's bound to be some mistakes. Of course, since no one is required to use Google's SafeSearch, this isn't as big a deal. However, Edelman points out that Google might want to work on improving its filtering mechanism. Google, for their part, admits that the filters go a little too far - but point out that the people who turn it on (since it is voluntary) are much more concerned about things slipping through, than they are about accidentally blocking innocuous sites.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Google filters tons of stuff anyway

As John Gilmore said to me "try looking up porn on google..." so I did, and didn't' turn up much. He says the google image searching won't turn up porn pix either.
