Google For Cops?
from the connect-the-dots dept
TechTV is running a story about a computer system called CopLink that is being referred to as a "Google" for cops - connecting all their various databases with some powerful search tools. Police can just put in random "clues" that they have, and the system suggests possible connections. It certainly sounds like a powerful system - though, the article doesn't address some of the concerns such a system might bring about. When people have these types of tools at their hands, they sometimes begin to rely too much on them - which could be a major problem if the system returns "false positives". It also might increase the drive for "more information" being fed into the databases, as opposed to "better information". If these concerns are clearly addressed, then the system actually sounds very useful in helping police track down criminals.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Cops aren't techies
If local cops have better access to national databases, it has implications for the relevance of federal law enforcement.
