Ads Get Even Bigger

from the content?--who-needs-content? dept

It wasn't all that long ago that online content companies finally moved away from the tiny banner ad to the "big unit" square ads that are now all the rage. Now, however, some folks have decided even those larger units are a bit too small and are moving to a new larger unit that takes up half the page. It's a little overwhelming, but I've noticed on the pages I've seen it on, I learn to tune it out just as quickly as I do with other ads. In some cases, I've even noticed that the new formatting makes the article easier to read (not as spread out - more like a newspaper column). Of course, I couldn't tell you, for the life of me, what was being advertised.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    No Subject Given

Still no contest for the ugliest and most annoying ads ever, "PopInAds" wins that battle hands-down:

I know popups are kinda annoying, but those are just ridiculous. I can't imagine how those could possibly be useful to advertisers. They pay a whopping $2CPM which I assume for most sites is hardly the worth the cost of having 0 repeat visitors. Now, if they only played sound clips ... :)
