Is Palladium Getting A Bad Rap?

from the a-taste-of-their-own-medicine? dept

Well, it appears that Microsoft is getting a taste of their own medicine, and not enjoying it too much. They're now accusing people of putting out FUD concerning their hastily renamed Palladium project - which they now refer to as the incredibly difficult to remember Next Generation Secure Computing Base (or the unpronoucable: NGSCB). Ever since Palladium was announced, people have pointed out how it can be abused by content providers who try to "lock down" their content. Microsoft says it's all a lie, and people need to look at the details of what they're trying to do. I certainly believe that Microsoft isn't nefariously trying to sneak some sort of system in that they honestly think will harm users. However, I do agree with those who point out that Microsoft clearly hasn't thought through some of the "unintended consequences" of the technology.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
